Melbourne SKA Orchestra

SATURDAY 11TH MARCH

From the fun loving humble beginnings in St. Kilda to the international stages of Glastonbury, Istanbul, Montreal, Edinburgh, New York and beyond, the band has steered their ramshackle train into the hearts of many. Initially formed to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the birth of Ska (1963-2003), their infectious energy soon earned them a coveted slot at Bluesfest and WOMADelaide, a recording contract and accolades from all over the world. Two ARIA award wins cemented their reputation as one of Australia’s best live acts, while three of their songs were chosen for a UK feature film about Ska.

The band have matched the appreciation with a work ethic that is second to none. To date they have released 7 albums, including a nigh impossible mission of recording a song a week for a whole year, the ARIA award winning 52 Fridays - One Year of Ska. This record celebrates the first 20-year chapter of a journey that is still going strong.

To celebrate 20 years of Melbourne Ska Orchestra, the band is releasing a limited edition Best of Vinyl and hitting the road to bring their signature International Big Band Ska Sound to stages across the country and is our showcase event for Prom Coast Festival 2023!

The Prom Coast Festival Committee thanks the South Gippsland Shire Council, Visit Gippsland and FRRR for their sponsorship of this event.

7.30pm Saturday 11th March 2023. Foster War Memorial Arts Centre, 79 Main Street Foster. $55 per person. This event is BYO.

Hidden Talents

SUNDAY 12TH MARCH

Hidden Talents is a combined adult and children’s writing and illustrating workshop hosted by South Gippsland’s published author, teacher and lecturer Michael Hyde and nationally renowned illustrator Craig Smith.

In this free event participants will search for their hidden stories and emerge with the beginnings of their own story. They will be shown tricks of the trade and how to develop stories both written and illustrated. Plus there will be an exhibition of 331 stories written for the Fishy Stories Writing Challenge in 2022.

Introducing your hosts:

Michael Hyde writes mainly for children, adolescents and Young Adults. He has published 40 books over a 35 year writing career. Some of his novels are MAX, Tyger Tyger, Hey Joe, Surfing Goliath, Footy Dreaming - all critically acclaimed. His Change the Game Sports Series on AFL, Basketball and Soccer sold 20,000 books. He recently wrote with his partner, Gabrielle Gloury, the popular, Girls Change the Game. They are currently writing a sequel. His most recent YA novel, Morrison and Mr Moore, about an unlikely friendship between a soon-to-retire school Principal and a rebellious 17 year old student – was placed on the Children Book Council of Australia Notables list for 2022.

Craig Smith has illustrated more than 400 books for children over 40 plus years, working with many of Australia’s most experienced writers and editors. He has been fortunate to have worked as a book illustrator his entire working life. His pathway to illustration came through reading, a love of humour and through drawing people. Craig loves stories. He loves being in a story – by that we mean really inside the story, thinking about the characters, what they might be doing, how to picture that? And, what technology to use? Pencil, paper, paint and ink certainly. Somewhere in the process digital tools and software.
